How to Play Online Blackjack

Blackjack is a table game where up to seven players face a dealer, each player plays one-on-one against the dealer and not with or against any of the other players at the table.

How to play blackjack

The object of the game is to hold a hand of two or more cards that is higher than the dealer's hand, but does not exceed 21.

All cards have their pip value, except the Ace, which can count as a 1 or an 11 and picture cards (King, Queen and Jack) count as a 10.

The Ace, when held by a player, can count as a 1 or 11 at his discretion and he can change his mind any number of times during play. The dealer has to always count the Ace as 11 if he has a card count of 17 or more. For example, an Ace and a 6 must count as 17.

A player that wins automatically with a "blackjack" (a two-card hand comprising of an Ace and any 10 value card, making a total of 21) gets paid odds of 3-to-2. All other winning hands are paid at even-money (1/1). There are also various side bets in most games, including Insurance which lets you win your stake back if the dealer hits a blackjack.

Game Variations

There are many different variations of casino online blackjack in 2017. Although most developers have a version of European Blackjack in their arsenal, you will also find Multi-Hand Blackjack at most sites.

Before you sign up to a site, have a look at the table games lobby. You'll discover the main variants on offer for real cash. The stakes can vary wildly from game to game as well.

You can even play a Live Dealer version of the game. This lets you gamble against a human croupier placed in a TV studio or casino setting. The croupiers deal and shuffle real cards, and you can chat to them in real time. It adds a nice 'live' setting to what can be a soulless pursuit.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is online blackjack legal?

It really depends on which part of the USA you live in, as online gambling is regulated on a state level. Those in New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware will find that they have the most relaxed laws though. It’s expected that other states will also soon start to deregulate online gambling for their residents.

What are the best casinos to play at?

There are loads of great online casinos accepting players from the US, and we’ve reviewed many of them on this site. At the moment, we consider InterCasino, Lucky24/7 and Spin Casino to be the best places to go if you’re a fan of blackjack, but check back regularly, as we’re always reviewing new and exciting online casinos.

How does it compare to regular blackjack?

Online blackjack uses the same basic rules as regular blackjack, however players will be able to enjoy the game at much lower limits – although high stakes games can also be found. Online blackjack has also introduced a number of optional side games, which add to both the action and the money you can win.

Is it popular in the USA?

Blackjack is massively popular in the USA and, along with roulette, is the most popular table game in any casino. This is due to its excitement and the skill needed in order to make some money while playing. The prizes can also be significant, which is another reason why so many people play this game.

How much is it possible to win?

The most you can win from one hand is a payout worth 3:2, which comes when you get Blackjack. In a session though, the amount you can win is unlimited – it really depends on how long you play for, your stakes, your skill level and the amount of luck you have.

Is there a tournament option?

Blackjack is a game played against the dealer, so tournaments haven’t really been possible in land-based casinos. The online casino world has allowed them to spring up though, and nowadays there are many casinos offering tournaments to their players. What’s more, these tournaments can have some pretty impressive prizes.

Can I use a strategy?

Many people claim that they know a fool proof strategy for blackjack, however there is no such thing. There are some popular systems, however these only work in theory, and not in practice. Therefore, it is best to play blackjack primarily for enjoyment, and to treat any wins as added bonuses.

Are blackjack games rigged?

No, they certainly aren’t. Any casino that we recommend will be monitored incredibly closely by external bodies, who will constantly check to ensure that casino players are being treated fairly. This makes it almost impossible for casinos to cheat blackjack players, or any other types of players.
