› Red Dog Poker Rules

The rules of Red Dog are very simple, and a player does not need to know all of them in order to play. In fact, due to the limited initial knowledge needed to play the game, we’ll start with just what a player needs to do.

First of all, players must put down an ante bet. Two cards are then dealt, and if a spread is available, the odds are announced. The player may then place a bet equal to the ante or else just continue. A third card is dealt, and if its value is between that of the first and second card, the player wins money on their bet or bets according to the odds of the spread that was dealt. This is all a player needs to know in order to start playing Red Dog.

Now, for the more complex parts of the rules. Once the first two cards have been dealt, a spread may have been established, but it also may not have if the cards are of the same value or of consecutive values. If the cards are of the same value, a third card is dealt and if it is also the same value, players win 11 to 1 on their antes, otherwise their bets are pushed. If the cards are of consecutive values, the antes are pushed.

When a spread of 1 or more cards in between has been established, however, odds will be declared. For a 1-card spread, these will be 5 to 1 odds. For a 2-card spread, the odds will be 4 to 1. A 3-card spread has 2 to 1 odds, while spreads of 4 or higher pay even money. Once the spread and its odds have been announced, players may choose whether to place their second bet. Getting a choice of playing a second bet is also featured in games like three card poker and Caribbean stud poker. What makes Red Dog different is that the initial ante isn’t folded if the second bet is not made, it simply means money is just paid out on the initial ante.
